Ocean County YMCA Resumes FREE Summer Meals Program

Meals will be available Monday through Friday from 11am to 12pm

Ocean County YMCA Strives to Combat Hunger By Providing Summer Meals

[Toms River, June 29, 2022]— Beginning Tuesday, July 5th, the Ocean County YMCA will once again be providing summer meals at its facility located at 1088 West Whitty Road, in Toms River.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 22 million kids receive free or reduced-cost meals thanks to the National School Lunch Program However, once the school year ends, only 17 percent of those same kids are able to access free meals over the summer break, leaving many children without these meals. The Y, with the support of Congressman Andy Kim, is working to fill that gap by keeping children healthy and well-nourished this summer, ensuring that kids reach their full potential.

“The Ocean County YMCA has gone above and beyond to make summer meals available to kids in Toms River this summer,” said Congressman Andy Kim (NJ03). “With the help of federal administrative flexibilities during the pandemic, the OC Y served as a summer meal site for the first time ever in 2020 and 2021, reaching families in need. Those flexibilities were slated to end, but I’m proud to have passed the Keep Kids Fed Act to extend them for this summer. The Y sprang into action to relaunch its summer meal program just over a week after the new law was signed—it’s truly remarkable, and a testament to the OCY’s dedication to serving our community. I’m excited to see families continue to receive nutritious meals at the Y this summer, and I am committed to passing my Summer Meals REACH Act—inspired by the OC Y—to make these changes permanent for next summer and beyond.”

Food pick-up begins Tuesday, July 5th – Friday, July 8th, from 11am-1pm, and will continue Monday-Friday through August 26th. Families will be able to pick up nutritious lunches and snacks daily by simply driving up to the Y. Those wishing to participate will need to bring their own shopping bags or boxes.
