Youth Swim Lessons

July Registration Begins June 20th

At the Y, swimming is a life skill. Our swim lessons prepare kids of all ages to stay safe and have fun in the water while building strong kids and confident swimmers. The Ocean County YMCA strives to create a safe, fun, and encouraging environment for children, youth, and adults to develop as swimmers.

Evaluations are required for all group lessons, except Water Discovery (ages 6months to 2 years 11 months).

Water Discovery

Parent and Child classes –  No evaluation

This class is designed to introduce children to the aquatic environment while introducing basic water skills and safety. Must wear swim diapers.

Water Acclimation

Beginner – Must be Evaluated

Child must be independent of parent and at least 3-years-old before the

first day of class. This class increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.

 

Water Movement

Beginner -Must be Evaluated

This class encourages forward movement in the water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

 

Water Stamina

Must be Evaluated

This class develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

 

Stroke Introduction

Must be Evaluated

This class introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl (freestyle) and back crawl (backstroke) and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Stroke Introduction

Must be Evaluated

This class introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl (freestyle) and back crawl (backstroke) and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.

 

 

 

Stroke Development

Must be Evaluated

This class introduces breaststroke and butterfly, while continuing to refine freestyle and backstroke. This class also reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.

 

Stroke Mechanics

Must be Evaluated

This class refines stroke techniques on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of  a healthy lifestyle.

Swim Conditioning

Must be Evaluated

Swim Conditioning is instructional/coached lap swimming for students interested in low-impact swim workouts that will increase their endurance and improve their technique. Junior Lifeguarding skills will be introduced.

Classes are once a week; each session is 1 hour.
