Giving the Gift of Possibility

2024 Red Triangle Honoree, Heather Barberi

At the center of the YMCA’s logo is a triangle that stands for unification of the spirit, mind and body. It also represents the YMCA’s highest honor: The Red Triangle Award. This award is bestowed upon individuals whose YMCA volunteer service has been clearly distinguished by length of time, devotion to our mission, and significant participation to the advancement of the Y.

The Ocean County YMCA is pleased to honor Heather Barberi with our 2024 Red Triangle Award.

From an early age, Heather was drawn to the idea of building strong, vibrant communities. Her passion for community work was ignited during two transformative internships with nonprofit organizations while in college, setting her on a path deeply rooted in service.

Over the past two decades, Heather has dedicated herself to the nonprofit sector. She began her career fundraising for the American Red Cross, driven by a deep desire to make a difference. Although she later transitioned to the for-profit world, gaining experience in the technology and financial services industries, her commitment to nonprofit work remained steadfast, demonstrated by her ongoing involvement in both professional and volunteer capacities. Seeking to reconnect with her local community, she transitioned to the role of Executive Director at the Ocean County College Foundation in 2014, where she focused on advancing the foundation’s mission and operations.

For the past seven years, Heather has served as the Executive Director of the Grunin Foundation, a private family philanthropic organization committed to fostering equitable, just, and vibrant communities along the Central Jersey Shore. In this role, she channels her skills and passion into championing innovative projects and forging impactful partnerships that support meaningful, transformative change.

Beyond her leadership at the Grunin Foundation, Heather actively engages with the community through various boards and committees. She has served on the board of the Ocean County YMCA for the past six years, supporting the Y on their journey to enhance lives and build a better community for all. Her board service also extends to ArtPride New Jersey, Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania, and Ocean Partnership for Children.

Heather’s career reflects her unwavering commitment to community service, characterized by a collaborative spirit, passionate advocacy, and a profound dedication to making a positive impact. She is grateful to be surrounded by loved ones, friends, colleagues, and community members on this journey, recognizing that meaningful progress is only achieved through collaborative action.

Together, we can truly make a difference.
